Saint Columba Monthly Newsletter

May 2010
Principal's Message:

Wow our last newsletter with new ones to follow next year. It has been extremely rewarding to serve this school and these students. Thank you for your trust.

Another successful month, we are blessed:

St. Columba’s Biggie Brain Academic Tournament held at Marquette High School on April 17 went extremely well with SCS taking Second Place. We won the IESA Regional Academic Team Competition, which we held here on April 28 and they move on to compete in the Sectional Tournament on Monday, May 3. We are all so very proud of the students involved and wish them well. They always represent us so very well as Christians as well as their success in the competition. A big thank you goes out to the parents and staff who assisted in the cafeteria, with reading, and monitoring at these events.

Let us all pray for our communicants as they receive their first communion on May 2 and for our eight grade students as they prepare for their graduation and their futures.

When St. Columba reaches out to someone in need we are very generous. Our dress down day fundraiser on April 14 raised $615.00 which means that many families extended themselves.

Principal

NEWS...

Exciting Academic News: St. Columba recently received the writing test results from Writing Quest, the standardized writing test required of all the seventh and fourth grade students in the Peoria Diocesan schools. Students were evaluated on the five elements of good writing. Those elements are: focus, support/elaboration, organization, conventions, and integration. Our seventh grade which was required to write persuasive essays, scored above all of the mean scores in the entire Diocese. Our average was 24.3 and the Diocese averaged 22.9 overall. Our fourth grade was tested with a narrative essay and scored above the average as well with a mean score of 21.5 with the Diocese of 21.3. These excellent results speak very well of our students and teachers.

Important--there is a public school teacher’s institute in the public school system on Monday, May 3, therefore, there is no AM/PM Bus Service on that day.

PLAN AHEAD: Following Diocesan Policy and guidelines, we must make up the snow day which we had on January 7. Therefore, our last day of school is June 1, 2010 with a Mass at 9:00 am followed by dismissal. Report cards and the like will be distributed as has been done in the past before Mass. There will be buses running in the morning but none at pick up time.

Warm Weather Dress Code: The warm weather dress code is in effect from the first day of school until October 30 and from May 1 until the last day of school. The warm weather uniform permits walking shorts or Capri pants in the same colors as pants and sandals with backs. The shorts must measure no more than 2 inches above the knee. Check the website in the handbook section for a complete description of our dress code. (Remember that socks must be worn and crocs must have straps).

From Marquette Academy: Let’s show our school spirit for Marquette Academy in this year’s Ottawa Memorial Day Parade on Monday, May 31st.  If you wish to participate, meet at the Courthouse between 9:00 and 9:30 am.  The parade marches from the Courthouse to Washington Square.  Students and parents from preschool to high school are welcome and encouraged to participate. Please wear your Marquette Academy t-shirt, if you have one.

Our faculty selects the month of May for Fine Arts Month at St. Columba. The Band Concert is on May 4; the 6Th grade Wax Museum will be presented on May 12; Young Authors Day on May 13; and the Eight Grade play is on May 19. The Annual Talent Show will follow all on May 21.

Don’t forget that all tuition and fees need to be paid for your child to graduate and for all students to receive their report cards.

Reminder: We do not want Students to be in the building (except for the Cafeteria) before 8:15 A.M. since there may not be any faculty supervision in the classroom areas. The exception is if prior arrangements are made with a faculty member.

We walk by faith

We walk by faith, and not by sight: No gracious words we hear of him who spoke as non e’er spoke. but we believe him hear.

We may not touch his hands and side, nor follow where he trod: yet in his promise we rejoice, and cry, "My Lord and God!"

Help then, O Lord, our unbelief, and may our faith abound; to call on you when you are near, and seek where you are found:

That when our life of faith is done, in realms of clearer light we may behold you as you are, in full and endless sight.

Henry Alrod

Please remember that children need to be free of a fever for 24 hours (without the use of a fever reducer) before they should be sent back to school. This is an excellent way we can all try and stay healthy.

Raising good sports...you can teach your youngster to be a good sport by being one yourself. When you attend a game, clap and cheer for players who try hard, even if they’re on the other team. You’ll help your youngster learn to be gracious to everyone in the game.

Don’t forget that we do have the "Birthday Club" to help support the Library. Our Library is run on strictly a volunteer basis and we are so grateful for them. Contact Mrs. Karla Jones for specific information.
